Maternity Style ~ Rachael Weaver

I recently got to style the beautiful Rachael Weaver of Denver’s Rachel Grace Photography for a fun and surprising (snow!) session with Meghan Valentine.  Rachael has so much natural beauty and is a no fuss kind of gal, so I loved doing her hair and makeup with a neutral smoky eye and curled soft waves into her hair before putting it up into a top knot.  She looked so gorgeous it took my breath away!    Baby Weaver is due any day now and I can’t wait to find out what they’re having!  My guess is a girl and I hope she’s born on my birthday – February 13th.

For Rachael’s first look, I restyled her baby shower outfit, adding a more ornate belt from her closet and matching boots.  The second look is a wonderful tube dress by Heidi Klum from A Pea in the Pod Maternity.  The wrap is from H&M and earrings from Claire’s.  You can’t see her boots very well, but they are amazing Frye knock offs from Target.  I have the real harness boots from Frye and they look exactly the same for only $59.99!  I brought along a sweet elephant from India to place on Rachael’s bump since the Weavers have decorated their baby’s nursery with items inspired by elephants – the belly photo is going to look so cute in the baby’s room!  The last look is a bright tee from A Pea in the Pod paired with Rachael’s own jeans and a sweater borrowed from my closet from the Missoni for Target collection last Spring.

Here she is… The woman all other pregnant women are jealous of…

And here comes the surprise SNOW.  It was actually so wonderful because Rachael had pictured her maternity shoot surrounded by white and a light snow fall.  This has been one of the driest winters I’ve seen in 35 years so we never thought it could happen.  But it did. :)

Rachael, you’re going to such an incredible mom.  Good luck and I can’t wait to hear the happy news!

Fashion Photo Shoot

I’m so excited to share this beautiful photo by Esther Cummings who is a budding local photographer (and blogger!).  She approached me about recreating an editorial look from a fashion catalog or magazine for her photography class and of course, I said YES!  After sharing our thoughts and aesthetics, we decided on a gorgeous image from the September Free People Catalog.  I loved the challenge of this assignment and had so much fun making it come to life.

I owe huge thanks to the wonderful staff at Francesca’s for loaning the beautiful blouse and necklace pictured, love to our model Jacki for letting me give her those big brows, and admiration to Esther for such a lovely photograph.  Hair, makeup and styling by Common Couture, wide leg cords from Anthropologie.  :)

And a couple behind the scenes and extras, just for fun and beauty’s sake.  :)

Back To School – Mom Style

This one is for the mommas doing school runs, walking to the bus stop, hauling butt in the minivan, however you get it done…  Now that my own little munchkins are back in school, I’ve seen a lot of moms that are frazzled, hurried, not exactly on their A game, and yeah, I’ve been one of them.  It’s been a few weeks and I’m being kind to myself here, but I think I’ve only had a day or two each week that was one of those, “I just can’t care what I look like!” days.  Everyone who knows me knows that I love getting dressed, I love wearing makeup, and I love to look my best simply because it’s how I’m comfortably happy.  I am a stylist after all!  ;)

So yes, most mornings I do look ready for the day at my 8am drop off.  With two cute, well-dressed kids in tow.  And yes, I’ve gotten some annoyed comments along the lines of “why do you always look so cute?! (insert accusing tone)”.  Because I love this stuff, NOT because I’m Super Woman.  So how do moms looks their best who don’t “love this stuff”???  Here’s some tips for styling up your mornings – even if you’re in work-out wear!  Starting from top to bottom…

1.  Hair:  I know it’s hard – I’ve got a lot of very difficult, crazy hair and a daughter with almost as much difficult, crazy hair that I have to do as well.  My best trick is DRY SHAMPOO.  I NEVER have time to shower before school runs, so dry shampoo saves the day, several days a week.  If you take the time to really style your hair 2-3 times a week, you can make it last and just refresh it instead of rewashing and drying.  I sleep on my right side and I honestly plug in my curling iron most mornings and curl 3-4 pieces of hair on the right side where it’s gone flat, spray some dry shampoo and I’m out the door.  Oh, and please no scrunchies.

2.  Face:  If you don’t wear makeup and you love your face – God bless America!!!  That is WONDERFUL!!!  If you need a little color and to bring out your best features, a 5 minute face is an easy habit to get into.  If all you do is swipe on some mascara and lip gloss or tinted chapstick, you’ll feel so much prettier, and yes, that matters and can change your day.

3.  Body:  If you’re a working mom (I admire you so much) you probably have to be prepped for a long day and are already done up.  If you’re a stay-at-home mom, you probably lack some incentive to get dressed in something other than sweatpants.  I get it.  I do.  BUT, if you commit for one week to do a little makeup, get dressed as though you’re meeting a fun friend for coffee somewhere nice, you’ll get so many compliments and feel so good that you’ll never stop.  You’re worth it.  You are, you are, you are!!!  If I’m heading to the gym I don’t try to hide it, I just wear nice work out clothes – I care that it’s obvious and not just what people think I wear everyday for “casual wear”.  Gym clothes should be just as well-fitting and make you feel as good as your regular clothes.  And I don’t think you should wear Uggs with sweatpants.  Refer to past blogs if you must.  :)  WORK IT:  http://www.commoncouturestyle.com/blog/?p=557  and UGH, UGGS: http://www.commoncouturestyle.com/blog/?p=237

4.  Feet:  Now I wear my Rainbows quiiiiite a bit, yes I do.  But there are super cute and easy to wear sandals besides flip flops (or Tevas, Birkenstocks, etc.) that we moms can wear.  Some simple shoes that are stylish and easy are ballet flats, or if those are too cutesy, pick up a pair of TOMS!  I’m not asking moms to wear heels or even wedges, just give your feet a treat of style and fun!

5.  Overall:  On a bad hair day (sometimes you just can’t save it!), leave the ball cap at home unless you’re heading to a game or out for a run and put on a cute fedora or other fun hat that expresses your personality.  If your outfit feels plain jane, add a colorful or printed scarf.  If your dress or oversize top feels/looks shapeless, add a belt.  I bet many of you have some amazing jewelry and accessories hiding in little drawers or boxes that don’t get opened often enough – it’s time to get those pieces out and let them see the light of day!

Other non-style tips that simply give me more time for style are making lunches at night, setting out clothes for my kids, (I’m way too much of an emotional dresser to do that for myself), having backpacks ready, and oh yeah, I’m lucky enough (or smart enough?) to have a Keurig on my nightstand.  And have you heard?  Starbucks is putting out K-Cups in November.  HALLELUJAH.

And as always, if you look at your closet and just sigh with despair, give me a call.  I’d love to do a wardrobe consult or go personal shopping with you!

Oh, and Fireside mom who rides her kid’s razor scooter to school to pick him up?  You’re my hero.

Crocs Employee Makeover – The Beautiful Melissa!

Through the “New Crocs. New You.”  makeover contest, I had the privilege of working with the local winner of the Crocs Makeover contest, Melissa Fish, on June 3rd.  The following day I found out that New York stylist Jenn Falik had worked with the national winner on June 3rd as well – it was meant to be!  You can see how they spent their day together in New York City here… http://www.crocs.com/ncny_home/ncny_home,default,pg.html and meet cancer survivor Shelly (from Highlands Ranch, Colorado!!!)

I love the idea and heart behind this contest because it gave women the chance to tell their story and why they were deserving of a makeover and some lavish personal attention.  The winner chosen from the Crocs office (they are a Boulder-born company) had to submit an essay just like the national contestants and Melissa was willing to share her words with us…

“I feel that I deserve a Spring Makeover because I’ve have a rough couple of years.  I finally decided to make a fresh start and move out to Colorado.  I was fortunate enough to receive a job at Crocs.  I love it here!  I would love to be able to get new shoes & clothes & hair for Spring, but I just dont’ have the money.  Things are very tight at home, and I’ve been helping with bills & groceries.  That doesn’t leave much money for myself!  I think it would help with my confidence as well.  I think a makeover would make help me feel prettier.  I tell everyone how awesome they are.   I love being a Crocs Ambassador, and would love the opportunity to be able to be even more of an Ambassador with more shoes!”

I started Melissa’s day by booking her a hair appointment at Fringe Salon where she got an amazing cut and color from stylist, Judy Dillon.  During her appointment we got to chat and get to know each other and I found out what an amazing and deserving woman she is.  Melissa is so dedicated and supportive to her family, works hard at Crocs and truly loves her job, and is a kind-hearted, beautiful woman.  I felt SO honored to meet her!  Once Melissa’s hair was finished, I applied her makeup and she was ready to shop!

Melissa and I went to Lane Bryant and I had a great time pulling lots of beautiful clothes for her to try on, even finding several things at neighboring store Cacique.  After modeling all the outfits I put together for her, Melissa got to purchase to her heart’s content.  She found two pairs of jeans, several tops, and fun underthings that every girl needs!  I must add that the staff there are AMAZING and helpful in just the right way.

Here are Melissa’s before and after photos for you to enjoy her transformation!  I think she looks absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!
