It’s Party Time ~ Are You Ready?

It’s the eve of my husband’s Christmas party, a.k.a. “Holiday Party” to be P.C.  I’ve known what I was going to wear for about….. 3 weeks.  That’s how I roll.  And it’s how you should roll too.  We’ve all had those horrible last minute shopping trips where we’re racing around desperately – it’s no way to go into an event!!!  My man works his a$$ off and he deserves to have me prepared and focused on him and his company’s success on the night of his party.  Not whining that I can’t find anything to wear and griping that nothing fits and being selfish in general.  (Yes, that’s happened.  More than once.)  This black dress is my pick for most versatile, can be worn by anyone, most flattering, most appropriate, most affordable for what you get, most likely to be worn again dress.  From Anthropologie, of course!  And with Pantone’s announcement, how could I not pair it with these gorgeous emerald earrings?

Planning ahead is crucial to having fun at a party.  And my gosh, if you’re like me and you rarely get out and dress up, you deserve to get out and have some FUN.  The key to planning ahead is knowing what to expect.  If you know the hostess of a party, simply ask her what she’s wearing, it’s the easiest way to make sure you’re dressed appropriately.  If an invitation is nondescript, take your cues from the venue and the time of the event.  An evening party will always be dressier than an afternoon one.  A party at a Mexican restaurant will always be much more casual than one at a hotel ballroom.  And remember that it’s ALWAYS better to be OVER dressed than UNDER.  If needed, you can say you have to stop by some fabulous event after the one you’re overdressed at.  :)

My goal in dressing my clients for special events is to make sure they are 1. appropriate, 2. comfortable, and 3. confident.  Allowing yourself time to be thoughtful in your dress choice is just kindness!  Expecting yourself to find something that fits the above criteria in one afternoon of shopping is not realistic, so don’t set yourself up.  Finding a dress that’s perfect in almost every way is why God inspired people to become tailors.  If the dress you love is too tight in one area, buy the next size up and have it taken in.  Do NOT shop for a number or a size, shop for what you love… most things can be made to fit by a tailor that ends up being YOUR size, not a 6,8,10, or 12.  You are not a number and a size 8 will look different on you than your other size 8 friend… and it should.  Because we’re all different!!!  (Okay, I’ll stop lecturing now)

Once you find your piece, make sure you try it on with the proper undergarments.  If you don’t have the proper undergarments, don’t say, “oh, I think I have this one old strapless that might work” and then wait til the night of to try it.  Just don’t!!!  Undergarments are as important as your outfit.  Make sure you have the correct fit of spanx, hosiery, bra, etc.  And remember to try your outfit on with the shoes you plan to wear.  I had to have my strapless black jumpsuit (yeah, you heard me) hemmed up so that I can show off my gold platforms (yeah, you heard me again) and have the right shape to my outfit.  An $18.00 investment.  So worth it!  And remember to be thoughtful about your outerwear.  It’s not okay to wear your fleece or ski jacket over your cocktail dress!  With even Target putting out cute faux fur coats, you can find something, I promise!  Beg, borrow, or buy!

When I’m hired to personal shop, my clients have to fill out a questionnaire for me that asks details like sizes, venue, color preferences, and even metal allergies for jewelry.  The details matter so much!  This is how I decide on where to shop.  Most often, I find special event wear at Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack, Anthropologie, White House Black Market, ModCloth, or LOFT.  The best deal on dress shoes is Nordstrom Rack, hands down!  They also carry larger sizes that can be difficult to find elsewhere.  Accessories are what I scrimp on if need be, finding deals on costume jewelry at Francesca’s or even Forever 21.  If something is truly going to be worn once with one special dress, let’s not spend our hard earned cash on it!

Want to avoid “Bitch Stole My Look”?  My favorite trick to make sure my clients are not wearing the same thing as their co-partiers is vintage or separates.  Vintage is a no brainer but requires more time for acquiring and tailoring.  If you’re limited to off the rack, finding an amazing skirt at one store and pairing it with a blouse from another, with jewelry from yet another is a surefire way to set your outfit apart and show that you put effort into your look.

Easy links to fabulous dresses are here:  Anthropologie, Nordstrom, LOFT, ModCloth, Francesca’s, White House Black Market, Spanx, and in case you walk on the wild side like me… Linda the Bra Lady’s got you covered.

Remember, there’s really no excuse to not being prepared, especially because you have me!  :)

Welcoming Warmth: Do’s & Dont’s for Spring 2012

As I sit amidst a blizzard in February, I’m taking comfort in focusing on the coming Spring and find myself truly ready to Welcome Warmth.  Every Fall I’m excited to start wearing my boots and sweaters, but by this time of year I’m longing for a beach vacation and wishing the seasons would change already!!!

I’ve taken in a lot of Spring’s offerings by catalogs, shops, magazines, and online inspirations… There’s much to be excited about and as always, a few trend curve balls.  My first Do is – invest in a hard working but feminine casual dress like this lovely gray one from Modcloth.  It’s out of stock now, but baby, you can bet I’m on the restock list – it’s perfect!!!

Here are my Do’s & Don’ts for Spring 2012…

Do continue to wear tights, opting for sheer pastel colors as the days get warmer.  I say Don’t do the socks with heels/wedges/clogs thing and if you choose to, you better SELL IT SISTER!  Not everyone can pull this off and I don’t recommend it unless you are a twig… let’s leave this look on the runway where it started in 2011.

And please, I can barely mention them and putting a photo of them on my blog is killing me… DON’T do acid wash jeans.  To my horror, these are currently for sale.  AT MACY’S.  Noooooo!!!!  If I have to tell you why, you really need me – call me right now.

DO buy some bright, well tailored pants like the Bennet chino from J.Crew.  These will brighten up your wardrobe and can be paired with anything from a favorite flowy top and flats to a tucked in denim shirt and wedges.

Following the neon trend is somewhat okay with me – as long as it’s done with taste.  Referencing the 80′s and recreating the 80′s are two VERY different things.  Gentle referencing, please.  I advise that you purchase one trendy neon item in your favorite color – you’ll be much more likely to put it to good use long after the trend dies out.  My favorite color is green and I love this bright pullover from Anthropologie… I can see it layered over a white button down with jeans, or under a chambray blazer with cropped black pants.

Adding this lovely, unique and trendy-but-classic necklace to the gray dress above or even with a simple white tee would show that you know the trends but you also know how to stay true to yourself…

If you don’t own a pretty pleated skirt, now is the time to invest in one.  A skirt like this may seem like a special event item to some, but the more you play with it, the more you’ll see that it can be paired with your favorite T, worn with a button down and belted, layered with a different colored slip for fun, and worn with just about any shoe.  A whimsical skirt like this makes creating juxtapositions with your clothes easy and chic.  Add a black T and black booties and you’re instantly a beautiful bad ass.

What to wear this Spring with your cropped jeans, perfect dresses and sweet skirts?  You’ll need to find your perfect shoe.  This one is mine for these reasons – I prefer a heel to have a platform for comfort, and the heel needs to be thick for stability.  I love multicolored shoes, but I always stick with neutrals to get the most for my money.  These are also Naturalizers, so I know I’ll be able to run after my kids in them!  Know your preferences before you buy – you’ll avoid having the pain of a shoe that is only making your closet prettier!

And my parting Don’t… Floral pants.  Unless you are an uber hip, uber skinny college girl, or a great aunt, please let this trend go unnoticed and unpurchased!  Here’s what I’m talkin’ about…

God help us, right?!

My parting words  - don’t be afraid to brighten up your wardrobe, just do it with subtle touches here and there.  Let some whimsy in, stay classic, and call me if you want a partner in crime!

Love, Jill

What To Wear on New Year’s Eve – Inspiration

It’s about to be “HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!” time… Are you ready??  We’ve only got a few days to plan our outfits for whatever parties we’re about to be the stars of, so here’s some inspiration from me to you ~ In honor of Pantone’s color of 2012, Tangerine Tango, a lovely and festive orange and silver sequin dress from Kitson at $195.00.  Pair with these amazing heels from Anthroplogie for $148.00 and lovely cuff from Forever 21 for $10.80.

Here are some more pieces that I’ve pulled for you to draw inspiration from.  If you’ve got metallic pieces in your closet, New Year’s Eve is the night to bring them out to party!  Add some fun jewelry, a splash of color, and you’ll be on your way to ring in 2012 with style…  Imagine how you’d mix and match these pieces, then go to your closet and create a new look for yourself!

If you’re wearing a little black dress from years past, add a shiny, bold belt or some bright shoes like the ones pictured here from ModCloth.  I love the idea of a watch necklace for NYE – what better way to keep track of the time when every second counts?  Pinning a brooch to a blazer or dress always makes a piece more personal and beautiful so pin away!  New Year’s is the time to go all out – there’s no other night that asks you to present yourself with grace and style as you are presented with a new beginning.  Here’s to an amazing 2012 – HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Love,

Jill
