My first styling memory is of a shopping trip with my grandma in her little hometown of Fergus Falls, Minnesota. I don’t remember why I got to go with her to choose a dress for her college reunion at Northwestern, but I knew it was an important event for her and wanted to do whatever it took to make her feel beautiful in the perfect dress. I was 11 or 12.
I remember encouraging my sweet, old fashioned, CLASSIC, grandma to go into a boutique on the little main street there. (She was aiming for the long-lasting, still-standing, Herbergers department store, still offering their goods at the Westridge Mall on West Lincoln in Fergus.)
We walked inside, and as I still do now when shopping with another woman, started pointing out lovely accessories and pulling clothes for her to try on… And then I saw it. THE PLAID DRESS. She didn’t want to try it, I’m sure she thought it was too flashy. But I pleaded and begged, and once it was on, there it was, my first MOMENT. She felt beautiful, I felt it, and I fell in love with fashion, beauty, and … Styling. So here I am, years later, ready to make lots more of those moments happen for lots more women. We all deserve it.
Thanks to the Vintage Fashion Guild for the photo of a dress similar to my memory. :) http://vintagefashionguild.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
I love this story, Jill! I am so excited to see all your amazing styling magic!
Jill! I’m from MN and so this story strikes “close to home”… pun intended. My sister actually went to Northwestern and the plaid dress would be perfect for your grandma
So cute.
